The Gluten Free Athlete was founded in 2023 by founder Angus Hanrahan. Angus was diagnosed with coeliac disease when he was 17 years old. The diagnosis came two weeks before the AFL draft combine in 2018 where he was one of 66 players in Australia selected to complete the combine testing in front of AFL club recruiters. Unaware that his world had just been flipped upside down, he tried to work out what coeliac disease was. In addition to the health issues he was facing at the time, he had a complete lack of awareness about coeliac disease and its health implications which led to him really struggling to manage an extremely active lifestyle and coeliac disease as a young kid (as well as answer questions from AFL clubs medical staff and recruiting teams about the condition). Born out of his own struggles with the gluten-free life, The Gluten Free Athlete has been created with the intention to empower those living a gluten-free lifestyle by providing the tools and inspiration to help unlock potential.
